Lately, I have been reading
Total Money Makeover by
Dave Ramsey. Chris and I are good with money, but we could always be better. In the book, the motto is "if you will live like no one else, later you can live like no one else". This statement is such an extraordinary statement, especially in this day in age. Dave Ramsey uses this statement to encourage people to not live the "american dream", indulge in debt, and get caught up in the whole credit card phase. The more I read this book, the more I am encouraged to start living like no one else. And not just when it comes to finances.
The idea of living like no one else now so that later we can live like no one else is not a new idea. This idea, in more or less terms, was actually brought to us at the beginning of time. God asks us to live like no one else of this world so that when we pass on from this Earth, we will get to truly live like no one else in Heaven.
"No one can serve two masters, either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money" (Matt. 6:24).
When we are told in Matthew 6:24 that we cannot serve two masters, that we have to choose one, our two options are laid before us. Money. Or God. In John 18:36, Jesus tells us " 'My kingdom is not of this world'". With this knowledge, we can break it down that our two options are of this world, or not of this world; money or God. If we are not choosing God, if we choose money (this world) it is important to know that we are choosing Satan. "We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one" (1 John 5:19).
Satan has the world. Satan has the money. Between God and Satan, which one do we want invest our time in. Which one do we want to live for now so that later, we can live like no one else?
When you take a moment to step back and truly think about what God wants and when you think about this world, it is amazing the comparison. For instance, how many of us live a less than Christian life, or give up Christian activities/beliefs, so that we can live the life of this world? How many of us are peer pressured against our beliefs so that we can seem "cool" to others? When it is all over, which crowd do I want to be considered "in"? Earth, where we are just vapors, or Heaven, for all eternity?
"whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away" (James 4:4).
According to CDC, the average life expectancy of a human is
78.7 years. If behind one door, the door labeled World, you could pick 78.7 years, and behind the other door, labeled God, you could pick eternity. Which one would you pick?
"'Do not lay up for yourselves treasure on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there you heart will be also'" (Matthew 6:19-21).
Saying yes and investing our time and efforts into this world is easier. More convenient. That's the angle of Satan's plan. We see this angle in the very beginning. Convincing Eve to eat from the forbidden tree was easy. convenient.
But, if we can say no to this world, if we can not live of this world, later, we will live better than we ever imagined. If we can say no to self and yes to the one who saved us, we will live better than the world could ever even provided.
" 'For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it' " (Mark 8:35).
So, besides eternity, what does God provide? Eternity in Heaven is beautiful. "The twelve gates were twelve pearls; each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass" (Rev. 21:21). There is no sadness, God will be with us, physically, always. "And I heard a loud voice from Heaven saying 'behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them, and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away'" (Rev. 21:3-4).
Yes, we will suffer. Be persecuted. Maybe even killed for following God. We will have to suffer now, live like no one else of this world, but in return, we get to serve the one true God, our Father, so that later, we can live like no one else.
"Remember, if the Joneses (all the broke people) think you are cool, you are heading the wrong way. If they think you are crazy, you are probably on track" (Total Money Makeover, p.105). In the case of life, if the Joneses, people of the world, think you are crazy, then you are doing something completely right. Ready to be crazy?
